Her Words Not Mine

25 May 2026

Sue, I love you

Would you consider me marriage material

I recall she paused for a long time

Harvey

"You would be the last person I would ever marry"

So I walked away from Sue

~ I've held ~

~ Her Words Not Mine ~

~ For it seems a lifetime ~

~ To turn them around in my mind ~

I met Sue in high school

I was the top-tier football star

Fumbling in love

I was good at running away

From those chasing me

The scholarships and offers piled up

And I said an awkward goodbye

Five years went so fast

I had run out of game

Knowing I had dropped the ball

When it came to Sue

And I looked her up

Still single

So I sent her a message

And seeing her over coffee

It all came rushing back

How I walked away without a second look

And said, Is the question I asked still living in your heart

I recall she paused for a long time

Harvey

"You would be the last person I would ever marry"

Why Sue did I miss the YES in your answer

Harvey I wanted you to run down

Never to lay down your dreams

For a girl named Sue

But you had to figure it out yourself

To catch what I was saying to you

I had to know

Would you hear my words or yours

I loved you so and still do

My answer was YES then and is YES now

"You would be the last person I would ever marry"

~ I've held ~

~ Her Words Not Mine ~

~ For it seems a lifetime ~

~ To turn them around in my mind ~

And 50 years later

At the end, she held my hand

And I whispered to her

"You would be the last person I would ever marry"
