Being Number Three

17 May 2026

When I married my wife,

I thought I would always be,

Her number one.

I learned I was only fooling me.

As then along came Winston,

Our beautiful Golden Retriever.

And he fell in love with my wife,

He told me he would never leave her.

And Winston said,

Dad, I have something to tell you.

I am Mom’s number one,

But you will and can always be number two.

That was life for several years,

Well, recently we got a new puppy.

And Winston came to me,

He said I have something to tell you.

I guess I am now Mom's number two,

And it's not easy.

As I now know what it's like to be you,

But at least I am not number three.

When I married my wife,

I thought I would always be,

Her number one.

I learned I was only fooling me,

Now the dogs may think,

They are number one and two.

That I am at best their mom’s number three.

Let me secretly say to you,

That I have played the numbers in my head,

And I smile as while the dogs sleep on the floor.

I am still the number one who sleeps in their mom's bed.

I am still the number one who sleeps in their mom's bed.
