A Good Bet

17 May 2026

This morning, so innocently

I started softly humming

The Brady Bunch Theme song

And placed my bet

20.00 on you

And true to form

My wife

Soon started to hum

The Brady Bunch Theme song

And then abruptly stopped

Her eyes, squinting darts at me

---Tell me

You did not just do what I think you did

And I could not stop chuckling

Then she says

You're mean

You know I love to hate you when you do that

How much did you bet

And she heard me say

20.00

We sure can use the money

She rolled her eyes

Shook her head and said

I will get you back

You can bet on that

And so sometime later

We were having a nice stroll in the park

And she casually asks

What's the name of that huge river way down in the States?

I said Mississippi?

That's it – I was trying to recall a riddle

Do you know how to spell Mississippi with one i

Without a second thought

I proudly covered my one eye with my hand

And spelled Mississippi – see, I know stuff

That's when I heard the chuckle

And I knew

I stopped to look at her ---and said

You're mean

You know I love to hate you when you do that

How much did you bet

And I heard her say

30.00

We sure can use the money

That was good, hun

Yep

A walk in the park

I rolled my eyes

Shook my head and said

I will get you back

You can bet on that

You know ---

We should have had enough money by now for a world cruise

But things tend to balance out

-- If you bet 20.00 on us

That the game goes on

It would be a good bet.
