College Graduation Song

In elementary I was an honor kid,

In high school they wanted me to be Miss Alma Mater.

I said, "Not me, I'm not beautiful!"

My teacher said, "It's the brain that matters."

So I stood on the stage, a shy girl taking the cue,

Singing, "Don't forget to remember me,"

That beautiful song that everybody knew.

And my father watched with tears in his eyes,

With gold and bronze medals to his surprise.

He was so proud, he couldn't sit still,

Knocking boxes over, my heart getting its fill.

Through the mall, through the tears, through the retail pain,

I’m "just a salesclerk," but I have a brain!

My father kept pushing, believing in me,

While my English instructor set my true voice free.

But I didn't have money to juggle the two,

Just four little kids and a life to pull through.

I'm stuck in the classroom, eyes glued to the board,

But my mind's with my baby climbing the cord,

Feeding her sister at four years old,

A warrior mama, brave and bold.

But God sent His angels, protected my sweet,

She knew how to survive and stand on her feet.
